HLA MENTORING Program

Purpose

The Hawaii Library Association mentoring program provides professional mentoring to students, new professionals, and practicing librarians anticipating and/or entering a new phase in their career. The mentoring program is designed to facilitate closer professional relationships and personal growth within Hawaii's library profession. The program encourages the participants to share knowledge, experiences, and expertise with each other for both professional development and mutual benefit.

Types of mentoring

Traditional Mentoring:
A partnership between a mentor with at least 1 or more years’ experience in the field is paired with a mentee who is less experienced or looking to develop their skills and abilities with guidance from a mentor. Each mentoring partnership is unique. The mentor and mentee will work together to identify the goals and objectives of your partnership, and the amount of time you can invest. Interactions between mentor and mentee can be as flexible as needed.

Peer Mentoring:
A partnership where both parties have similar levels of experience are matched because they have complimentary goals and skill sets. Peer mentoring partnerships have been shown to increase motivation, support, and resourcefulness for professionals.
Please indicate which type of partnership(s) in which you have interest.
There is no binding commitment - on either part. If, for any reason, it is no longer desirable to continue the partnership, either partner may elect to end the relationship.

Who is eligible?
The Mentoring Program is open to all HLA members. Mentees and mentors can either be HLA student members or an HLA member; you don’t have to currently be working in a library to participate. The official mentor period is for one year, although both parties are certainly welcome to extend this period.

Timeline
  • June - Matches are announced and pairs can begin their partnerships
  • August-November - Monthly updates and check-ins with your mentor or mentee
  • November-December - HLA Conference meet up
